The state Government’s Equal Opportunity Bill has now passed both houses of Parliament and is for all intents and purposes, law. Where to next?
The VGLRL reiterates its commitment to more than just getting us back to the 2010 laws that never came into effect. It is one of our key goals to end blanket religious exemptions and exceptions in equal opportunity laws and that aim remains despite this setback.
We urge everyone, including political parties and non-discriminatory religions and denominations, to join us in this commitment.
In the meantime, there are some things we can all do. Find out what your six local members (one Legislative Assembly and five Legislative Council) really think about this issue. Demand face-to-face meetings and grill them about it.
While the next state election is some time away, keep an eye on your local newspapers and when parties announce their candidates, put heat on them too.
Please let the VGLRL, TransGender Victoria or Bisexual Alliance Victoria know about any discrimination experienced from religion at any time, whether that took place in the past or if it happens in the future.
We need every shred of evidence to continue to build our case to achieve our goal of ending discriminatory laws and your help is vital.

Right now, following this regressive change in law, things may seem gloomy. I honestly believe we are moving forward overall. The continual increase in support for equal marriage, the progress on issues like Safe Schools, more young queers standing up earlier in life and the recent historic UN decision are part of long-term progress and change.
Keep the faith — just make sure it’s the right type of faith!
