This document is to assist transgender people navigate the often complicated process of changing identity documents to affirm their gender identity.

TGV thank the Inner City Legal Centre (New South Wales’ GLBTI Legal Service) for producing the NSW version of this fact sheet, which has been adapted for Victoria by TGV with the assistance of the Public Interest Law Clearing House (PILCH).

TGV are also grateful to the Southern Health Gender Clinic for resourcing assistance.

This is a recently republished electonic version of a 2012 document. Since its original release there have been positive changes in two areas.

VicRoads have begun to update their policies and this process continues. Please check the VicRoads website regularly for any changes.

On 13 June 2013, the federal government released guidelines relating to trans* and gender diverse (and intersex) people in relation to federal jurisdictions. These developments are not reflected in this document.

As this document was written with legal assistance TGV cannot alter it without further legal advice. We have now sought legal advice to assist with the updating of this document given these recent developments.

TGV also acknowledge that the terminology used in this document may have changed in a variety of contexts. We respect there are also differences by region or depending on culture. We will be looking at the various way that we can address and elaborate on this in the updated publication when it is released in the future.

TGV uses TGD to refer to people whose gender identity or expression is different from that which was assigned at birth or that which is expected of them by society.
